Rockford Counseling and Health News-Look for a Nutritional Component at Logan Health and Healing Center Soon
Rockford Counseling News
If you have followed either this blog or the blog I update not so frequently anymore, called Logan Counseling, then you know that Logan Counseling and Logan Health and Healing Center are actually the professional disguise for my wife Julie and I.
Our marriage and our children and even Fuller, the Therapy Dog, are integral parts of our business, and our office, while a professional office, has children and dog there frequently. Actually, many of Julie’s clients like having Fuller there, and he is quickly becoming a fixture in sessions and groups…very loving and affectionate, and only occasionally, stinky, but a great asset nevertheless.
As Julie’s practice has grown, she has considered a nutritional component, and is moving in that direction appropriately. Not too long ago, Julie purchased a tool for herself from the Body Media folks, consisting of an armband which measures some body functions and calculates a calorie burn for the day, and provides an online site to add in your meals for the day, so you can get a calorie intake vs calorie burn measure. The idea is to track your eating and exercise and lose weight. When she first got her arm band, I did not pay a great deal of attention, sort of waiting for the whole thing to go away, as weight loss plans sometimes do, especially when one is trying to take care of a growing business and keep tabs on two kids and a mate and one dog and four cats. Fast food can become and easy default.
Julie was very dutiful about using the tool, and was making some good progress with it, when the cable which links the arm band to the computer got lost, so it the armband could not be recharged, and its use did indeed fall by the wayside.
Then I ran across an article on Wired Miagazine that spoke to some neat new electronic gadgets that they reccommendeded, one of which was the Body Media arm band, and another called FitBit. Those of you who are married may recognize this next bit of synchronicity from your own marriage, but I checked out the Body Media website and discovered that it has an affiliate program. I applied to the affiliate program and was accepted (which means I get a commission on any sales of the Body Media program through any of my online properties) and thought that I would ask Julie if she wanted to use the tool with me, so we could be a test case for the upcoming nutritional component of Logan Health and Healing Center.
At that point, Julie pulled out her Body Media arm band and showed it to me. Of course my jaw dropped, and to Julie’s credit, she did not ask with disdain why I was just catching up to her lead? She simply agreed that we had something to gain personally and professionally by doing the Body Media program together, since both of us are over weight.
So I ordered mine, and got it four days ago, along with a cord to upload and recharge the monitor. As soon as I put it on, and the arm band is not very noticeable, I began to be more aware of my snacking. Like I had a conscience on my arm. Not quite instant guilt, but close.
So for the last four days, we have been getting our routine down, and determining whether the monitor actually records steps when you take them, and is indeed accurate, and it appears that it is. The daily chart shows upticks in heart rate and sweat and breathing at the times of the day when I am exercising, and I find the record of my sleep patterns quite interesting too.
I have not lost any weight yet, in part because my weight loss plan is set to be a gradual weight loss plan.
We are shooting for a significant personal improvement as an example to our clients, and we want the Body Media tools to a revenue stream for our business.
